The birds are chirping again, flowers are blossoming, and the sun is smiling brighter. An indication that spring is here again! Undoubtedly the most delightful time of the year, it signals a new beginning, renewal, and rejuvenation. Although the pandemic and the recent winter storm might have taken a toll on our mental and emotional wellbeing, springtime brings about a rekindled hope.
Whether you’re already on a spring break or about to, everyone is eligible to enjoy this fantastic moment. In order not to be caught unaware by the load of activities to be enjoyed this springtime, here is a list of 6 super things to do this spring.
Engage in Outdoor Activities
To all camping and hiking enthusiasts, it is time to dust your boots and your camping tools to enjoy the Lone Star State’s magnificent landscapes, once more. The moderate temperature in spring (Avg. 65.1F) makes it the perfect time to engage in these activities.
According to a University of Michigan study, lingering outside during spring can be especially beneficial. With pleasant weather, it improves mood, memory, and broadens cognition i.e. openness to new information and creative thoughts.
Texas provides a variety of awesome parks: From Big Bend National Park in West Texas, Caddo Lake State Park in East Texas to Padre Island National Seashore on the Texas Coast. You can make reservations at State Parks here.
Attend the 32nd Burton Gin Festival
Spring provides a conducive time for festivals, and the Cotton Gin Festival is no exception. If you’re curious about cotton ginning - a method of separating cotton fibers from cotton seeds, then you don’t want to miss the Cotton Gin Festival.
Held annually in Burton, home of the 1914 Burton Farmers Gin, it is a free, family-friendly event featuring a day full of fun and history. This year, the Festival holds on April 17 (usually on the third Saturday in April of each year). It presents various side attractions, such as: parades, classic car shows, fun contesting, food and drinks topped with live music.

Cultivate a Garden
Do you enjoy fresh food? Do you admire the adventure of growing your own food? Spring is a favorable time to grow a garden with your favorite vegetables. This is due to the fact that adequate sunlight that ensures photosynthesis, and birds or insects that guarantee pollination are in abundance.
Whether it is a low-sunlight vegetable like spinach, broccoli, and cabbage or full-sunlight vegetable, such as: tomatoes, beans, pepper, and cucumber, there is a substantial availability of sunlight to ensure their growth.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension provides in-depth information on how to grow your garden for various vegetables.
Watch the Birds
To all bird enthusiasts: you're at the right place at the right time! Texas is by far the most bird diverse state in the nation. There are approximately 654 bird species in Texas as of June 2020. This high volume is due in part to Texas being a major flyway for migrating birds.
Birding the Border event takes place April 29 - May 2. It will feature birding trips to a mix of private, restriction access, and public lands in Kinney and Val Verde counties.
Find information on registration here. While registration ends April 12, tickets are selling out at a speed of light. So, hurry!
Spice Up Your Exercises
While indoor exercises might be okay, outdoor exercises are more beneficial. Besides the substantial dose of sunlight you get - which is a great source of vitamin D, you also get to breathe fresh air and enjoy nature’s priceless beauty.
A review has shown that, “Compared with exercising indoors, exercising in natural environments was associated with greater feelings of revitalization and positive engagement, decreases in tension, confusion, anger, and depression, and increased energy.”
As an amateur Yogi myself, I experience enhanced concentration when practicing outdoors, and it also provides cool pictures for the gram too.
Therefore, whether you practice yoga, calisthenics, pilates, run or jog, it is time to add the spring effect.
Witness the Wildflower Bloom
You guessed right! The list is not complete without the wildflowers. Or, what is spring in Texas without the wildflowers?
As winter bids us farewell, the wildflowers come to play. From Bluebonnet, Indian paintbrush, Pink evening primrose, Blackfoot daisy, to Winecup and lots more, Texas provides a wide array of these beauties, creating a rich palette almost everywhere you go.
Besides enjoying the sight of Bluebonnets and other wildflowers, you can also attend the Most Exciting Small-Town Festival in Texas: The Bluebonnet Festival. The festival is held on April 9-11 in Burnet, the Bluebonnet Capital of the World. Attended by about 30,000 people annually, it is an exciting moment to engage in art and crafts, live music, Wiener Dog races and more - all in celebrating the State Flower. Tickets and registration are available here.
Also, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center offers field trips for wildflower sighting. You can reserve your spot here.
