Now we’ve seen some strange stories come and go, but this week takes the cake (so far). Stories like 3D printing seafood, stuffing a pumpkin with a whole chicken, how prices (and profits) have gone up which is real scary, and even a contest to give up bacon for a chance to win a lifetime supply of bacon!
3D Printed… Vegan Seafood?
We’ve heard of faux bacon or faux meat before, we even had a feature about lab-grown whole cuts of meat, but 3D printed salmon? Mycorena and Revo food has been working on a project to createt vegan salmon. Utilizing 3D printing technology, they are now trying to create salmon substitutes that… well… look like salmon. Personally, if anyone wants to eat salmon (wild that is) then they should just eat the real thing. And if anyone wants to be vegan, then they can be vegan and eat whatever vegans eat.

In an effort to lure more people into the dark side, I mean, to veganism, the company is working on removing the barrier between animal-based and plant-based vegan products by creating substitutes that can pass off as the real thing.

The Scariest Thing This Halloween, Greedflation!
Prices are rising all over the world, this is a fact that everyone is facing. Depending on where you are and what you’re getting, prices of staples are up anywhere from 12.4% to 23.4%. The reason they give for this is inflation, rising cost of goods, and other things making it sound like they didn’t have a choice in raising the prices.
The funny thing is though that profits by these supermarkets have gone up by almost the exact amount as the price increases! That’s right, 17% inflation increase, 17% net earnings after adjustments! I’m not being a conspiracy nut, but when they say they’re raising the prices to cover for the rising costs of goods, then shouldn’t that mean that their profit margins shouldn’t be increasing? What this report from the BBC states is that some stores have reported profit gains even higher than that of the prices raised!
In dollars, grocers have made an average of $1.5bn in the first two quarters of 2022, up from $800m in 2019. Their margins are also higher than pre-pandemic - 3.5% in 2022, up from 2% in 2018, despite the increase in production costs.
Grocers have attributed the higher margins to an increase in sales and efficiency.

A What?!?! Inside of a Pumpkin?
We’ve all seen those hilarious takes by Gordon Ramsey on Tiktok reacting to various videos of home cooks trying to do something special or unique. Sometimes the reactions are pretty cool with Ramsey giving a thumbs up on the recipes and many times, the reaction is just priceless. Ranging from mildly amused to fuming mad, this time, well, you’ll just have to see it to believe it! Hands down one of the scariest things he’s seen this Halloween, well, maybe after Greedflation.
