6 Texan Whiskey Distilleries That Are To Die For

Ever find yourself sitting in your kitchen trying to enjoy that store shelf-bought mundane bottle of whiskey? I’m pretty sure I remember going through this very scenario right before I passed out and woke up with a half-eaten twinkie on our couch at 4 am. Good times. But if you want to get acquainted with the joy that is whiskey, you need to look beyond your go-to store’s shelves.

Searching high and low, I’ve spent my fair share of time looking for the highlight whiskey destinations in Texas. These  Texan jewels were, for me, the most memorable times I have had with friends and family since it gave us an insight on the history of whiskey in the Lonestar State. Here are the 6 Texan whiskey distilleries you should check out.

Yellow Rose Distilling

The first legal distillery in Houston, the Yellow Rose Distilling is one of the top-most choices on your whiskey tour of Texas. For a fee of 10 dollars, you will be taken on a tour of their distillery and I, personally, enjoyed this since the guide was very informative when it came to all things whiskey and we got to try five different blends. Walking through the distillery, you can smell the smokey aroma that goes well with their Rye Whiskey. A bang-for-your-buck experience in my honest opinion.

Ironroot Republic Distilling

If you’re looking for a home-grown distillery that’s run by good whiskey and family values then look no further. Ironroot Republic Distilling offers a unique take on a Texas old-time favorite by incorporating French distilling techniques in making their brand of whiskey with a unique flavor profile. The owners are hands-on when it comes to touring whiskey adventurers like me and I also got to taste the different spirits that they were currently offering. Do try their Bourbons since they’re to die for!

Acre Distilling Company

Walking through the doors of Acre Distilling Co. you’ll know that you’re about to have a great time with your friends and family. Brad, our tour guide on our magical whiskey adventure, went into detail when it came to their distilling process and the history of whiskey. What stood out to me was their Smoked Single Malt that Brad took it upon his own to explain to me the intricacies of my preferred spirit. The experience was so fun that I ended up going home with two bottles to enjoy with my friends back home.

Treaty Oak Distilling

Established back in 2006, Treaty Oak Distilling gives you a great V.I.P. experience with their Single Barrel Select program that will give you a great insight into the distilling, tasting, and bottling experience that you won’t find elsewhere. Their whole distillery is located in a sprawling area where you can day-drink with friends while enjoying the fresh outdoors. Me and my friends arrived at 3:00 in the afternoon when the sun was just right and the afternoon felt more golden as the finely crafted spirits made for great conversation and an all-around good time. Also, try pairing their bourbon with some barbecue.

Ranger Creek Brewing and Distilling

If you want to mix it up a bit with some beer and whiskey on your magical whiskey trail of Texas then Ranger Creek Brewing and Distilling is right up your alley. It sure was a pleasant surprise for me when I got there with my wife because I thought we got lost since the whole distillery is in the middle of an industrial park. TJ, the head distiller, gave us an informative tour of the whole distilling process while we tasted samples of their finest blends and even beers! What sets this distillery apart from the rest is that they even go into the basic finances when it comes to running a distillery of your own. The cherry on top of the whole experience is that the food trucks outside may just be a tour in themselves.

Garrison Brothers Distillery

As far as distillery tours are concerned, you better have a designated driver for this one because you sure are in for a hell of a ride. Being Texas’ oldest distillery of fine bourbon, you’ll get to know whiskey through the eyes of master distillers and how they work their magic from grain to bottle. What’s also great about this distillery is the history of struggling to come up with Texan bourbon and how they adjusted their distilling methods to the very climate of Texas. After the whole tour, you can sit back and relax in the shade while you sample their finest spirits with friends and family.

These six distilleries are, to me, jewels of Texas that should be on every Texan’s go-to list. The fine blends that each distillery offers is a testament to the Texan pride that everyone is very familiar with. Despite the challenges of having to distill high quality whiskey in Texas’ harsh climate, these distilleries are living testament to the persevering nature of every Texan striving for excellence despite the odds.
