Austin Chef Auction
Discover > Truly Texan > Austin Chef Auction
The Allan House is holding a traditional annual Austin chef auction this October. It’s a unique, local charity event that brings together NGOs working on providing steady food supply for those who need it, best Austin chefs and local businesses.
The main reason to take part in the auction is to help the Sustainable Food center and Urban roots which are the organizations that the auction is helping. However, it’s also a chance to try the food of some of the best chefs in the state and possibly in the whole country.

The Event
The event takes place the historical Allan House, on October 3rd from 6 to 10 PM. The d’oeuvres will be prepared by the chefs on whose meals you could bid and the auction itself is run by celebrity auctioneer Walt Roberts and emcee Kelly Stocker. There’s also a musical event after the live auction.
Besides the chefs, other local companies are also looking for a way to pitch in and help. Their products and services could also be something you bid on in a silent auction. The companies include:
Lick Honest Ice Creams, Tillie’s, Antonelli’s Cheese Shop, Wine & Swine Barbecue Event, William Chris Vineyards, Texas Fine Wine Tasting and Stonewall Motor Lodge.
The Offers
-Black’s BBQ offers a 20 person backyard BBQ package delivered to your home. The most important and well known part of the package is their iconic brisket. The package also includes a quick lesson in how to make a restaurant quality brisket yourself.
-Uchi/Uchiko will provide the comfort of their amazing dining room that you can share with nine of your friends. They offer the best seafood in whole of Texas and that’s something given how many different seafood styles are there in Texas. There’s also a demo of how such is prepared.
“Vixen’s weddings” is also one of the restaurants on whose offer you can bid and their package is just as generous as the ones we mentioned before. It accommodates a party of 15. The bid is for the evening of food and cocktails. There are 60 different gins to choose from, coming from all over the globe.
Barley (how long does barley last?) swine is a restaurant serving Texas grown healthy farm to table menu. The bid is for the private and interactive dinner for ten. This means that you don’t only get to dine on great food, but also learn about sustainable farming and cuisine.
Il Bruto is an Italian restaurant that offers a multi course meal for ten with the wine pairing as well. The chef was born and raised in Italy and this restaurant doesn’t try to incorporate Texas styles to Italian food, (What wine goes well with Italian food?) instead it offers a slice of Italy in Texas.
When it comes to best food in Texas, beef brisket (What wine goes well with beef brisket?) is frequently claimed as its National Dish. Check it out here to have a detailed information of it.
The Alan House
The Alan House will host this wonderful event and the House itself is a great place whose service you might need long after the auction. It’s one of the most favorite wedding venues in Texas. It was built in 1883 (which makes it as old as Texas) by a Scottish immigrant John T. Allan.
The house changes a few purposes, from a personal home to a boarding school to what it is now, meaning a piece of old Texas right there in the middle of the modern city. Even though the home is restored in details it’s also set up to have all the modern conveniences.
Sustainable Food Center
The NGO behind the auction is called Sustainable food center. It’s an organization that wants to continue Texas farming tradition but change it into one that focuses on sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture.
It was founded in 1993 but it finds its inspiration in Austin Community Gardens that were started in the 70s. They support the agriculture industry starting from the farm, going through the restaurants and delivery businesses and ending up with the consumer.
Urban Roots
Urban Roots is the second part of the charity Austin and it’s equally worthy and important NGO to support. It started in 2008 by helping teenagers from struggling families and struggling communities find their way by working in farming and sustainable agriculture. This has transformed both their lives and their communities at large.
This isn’t only about volunteering with the local farms. It’s actually a paid job that can be turned into a career and help the kids who need stability more than anyone else.
Conclusion
Austin Chef Auction is a great way to support local NGOs that are working in agriculture. It’s done by bidding on the meals made by the local chefs. This money goes towards Urban Roots and Sustainable Food Center which are the NGOs helping local farmers and especially young people from disadvantage backgrounds to find their way to agriculture.
At the same time it gives you chance to try food made by the best chefs in the state.
